The Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group (CSG) was recently spotted moving through the Suez Canal, likely enroute to the Arabian Sea as part of heightened tensions between Afghanistan and its neighboring US partner states. Tensions have been rising since 2015 when the Afghanistan National Military began conducting exercises along its border with Pakistan in conjunction with the China-backed Afghani government making claims to Pakistani minerals and land.
This reporter reached out to the US Navy's 5th Fleet Public Affairs Office for comment and received this: "5th Fleet has long been responsible for the safety and security of the region and will continue to ensure that safety and security. Carrier strike groups are inherently flexible maneuver forces that demonstrate the United States' ability to support friendly nations with naval combat power whenever we see fit."
Previously, the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, based out of NAS North Island, San Diego, California, was seen operating in the Mediterranean Sea in support of combat operations related to the ongoing Syrian conflict. The Abraham Lincoln is accompanied by Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9, Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay (CG-53), and Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. (DDG-121), USS Spruance (DDG-111), and USS Michael Murphy (DDG-112).
