Pro: Really good operation for HOG flight as a whole today. Several dozen kills per pilot, gun runs felt clean, good comms and good splitting of tasking, didn't take any damage or losses, good coordination between hog pilots vis-a-vis rearming, positioning, ISR vs active CAS, etc

Con: No secondary was ready to take over comms when Infidel went down, resulting in several strikes that we held off from but which could probably have helped avoid some additional ground casualties if we were able to take the shots (ex a group of AT-armed infantry ahead of the friendly convoy who we tried but failed to get clearance to engage). Also, operation was too short. Also, would have been a good idea to have us do ISR ahead of the initial convoy.

Overall a general negative sentiment from Viking-1. Thank you for running the OP regardless, we hope to see improvements in a future iteration!

Pros:
  • We felt that the OPORD and mission planning looked like it was done well, and it looked as though it was going to be an exciting OP. Worth sticking with the general concept, but tweaking it for a redux.
  • Vehicle commanders and drivers were able to flex their talents.
  • Pyrrhic victory, but a victory regardless.
Cons:
  • Viking-1 took a hit 15 minutes into the OP from an RPG launched tandem warhead about halfway to the objective. This caused a mass casualty (7-9 uncon) scenario including our squad actual and driver.
  • Misfit-1 took some heavy casualties which forced Viking to proceed with haste. This caused several difficulties:
    • The infantry portion of Viking's mechanised infantry was unutilised for the duration of the OP with 0 dismounts. The experience for the foot soldier was either being sat in the Stryker or being uncon.
    • The convoy wasn't able to proceed with the level of security that was desired by Stryker crews.
    • The pacing of the OP suffered and the runtime of the op was 1 hr 15 as opposed to the normal 2 hrs due to expedited movement.
    • The convoy never stopped, the convoy net essentially became the platoon net.
Lessons Learnt
  1. When conducting a convoy into unknown territory without an air asset for ISR, Viking's best bet is to utilise a drone operator.
  2. I would have preferred to have seen a much more gradual rise in contact to ease people into the one-life op, the early contact caused a couple of disconnects out of frustration. Pacing felt off generally on this OP.
