Roles and Responsibilities

The Cavalry Scout Stryker Platoon

The Scout Stryker Platoon is a hybrid fighting force with the main responsibility of conducting reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition (RSTA) for the Task Unit. Its secondary responsibility is to conduct direct action against enemy forces, mostly targets of opportunity spotted during reconnaissance, using close combat maneuvers and indirect fires. The Scout Stryker Platoon is entirely organic with the capabilities to switch between a wide range of missions while being entirely self sustaining in combat operations. This means that the individual scouts within the platoon must be extremely proficient in their duties and responsibilities AND have the capability to perform the roles of others in the event that the platoon is shorthanded. The Scout Stryker Platoon functions a Platoon HQ - consisting of a Platoon Leader, Platoon Sergeant, Platoon Medic and any Troop or Squadron/Battalion Attachments - three Stryker Scout Squads - consisting of a Squad Leader, an M1296 Stryker Dragoon ICV with a Driver and Vehicle Commander and two identical Scout Teams consisting of a Team Leader, Medium Machine Gunner and two riflemen. Lastly, a Weapons Squad is ran in the Scout Platoon, with a primary focus on the 60mm M224 and 81mm M252 Mortar, but they can also use the BGM-71 TOW for added AT capability for the Platoon if necessary.

PLATOON LEADER

VIKING-6
The Platoon Leader (PL/OIC) is responsible for directing his teams and squads within the platoon, and passing down his and his higher commander's intent. He oversees the execution of his mission orders, and works closely with the Platoon Sergeant and Weapons Squad Leader for indirect fires and sustainment.
PLATOON SERGEANT

VIKING-5
The Platoon Sergeant (PSG) is responsible for overseeing sustainment within the platoon, is the senior vehicle commander, and works directly alongside the Weapons Squad Leader for employment of indirect fires. It is the Platoon Sergeant's responsibility to ensure that the subordinate leaders in the platoon are efficiently and expertly achieving the execution of the Platoon Leader's intent. The Platoon Sergeant may also assume the role of the Vehicle Commander for a Stryker if a squad is under strength.
STRYKER SQUAD LEADER

VIKING-1,-2,-3
The Stryker Squad Leader (SL) is responsible for his two scout teams and his Stryker ICV's maneuvers. He directs his scout teams to achieve the commander's critical information requirements (CCIR), fulfills the commander’s priority intelligence requirements (PIR), as well as ensuring the destruction of the enemy in close combat. The Stryker Squad Leader is also the secondary Forward Observer for the platoon's organic indirect fires assets as well as the 1st Cavalry Division's Artillery (DIVARTY). The Stryker Squad Leader is given a lot of freedom of movement for his given missions, given he has the best eyes and understanding of a situation on the ground. The Stryker Squad Leader may also assume the role of the Vehicle Commander if the role is unfulfilled.
STRYKER VEHICLE COMMANDER

SIERRA-1,-2,-3,-4,-5,6 / VIKING -1V,-2V,-3V,-4V,-5V,-6V
The Stryker Vehicle Commander (VC) is responsible for the operation of his Stryker ICV and for achieving the Squad Leader's and Platoon Staff's intent. He functions the Mk44 Bushmaster II 30mm Chain Gun aboard his ICV, the TOW 2 Anti-Tank Guided Missile or the FIM-92 Stingers, the smoke countermeasures, and gives orders to the Stryker Driver for movement.
STRYKER VEHICLE DRIVER

The Stryker Vehicle Driver (VD) is responsible for the delivery of the mounted personnel and achieving the maneuver orders given by the VC or the SL. It is imperative that the Stryker Driver stays mounted as often as possible to ensure the vehicle is consistently capable of rapid mobility.
SCOUT TEAM LEADER

The Scout Team Leader (STL/FTL) controls his scout team and directs the fires of his team members. The Scout Team is the smallest maneuver element within the platoon. A Stryker Scout Squad operates two Scout Teams that are typically identical in capabilities. He is the initial point of contact for all team members within his team and oversees the direct combat actions his team is doing. In a scouting capacity, the Scout Team Leader is in charge of ensuring that his team accomplishes all of the commander's priority intelligence requirements. The Scout Team Leader is typically the tertiary Forward Observer in the Platoon, but may, at times, function as a designated Forward Observer depending on the mission. The Scout Team Leader is armed with an M320 Grenade Launcher and functions as the team's grenadier if the M32 Grenade Launcher is stowed in the Stryker's Cargo.
M240 MACHINE GUNNER

The M240 Machine Gunner (240) operates the M240B Medium Machine Gun (MMG). He is responsible for employing overwhelming suppressive fire from his machine gun. The Scout Team operates an M240 Machine Gun instead of an M249 in an effort to maximize distance and stand-off from enemy threats.
RIFLEMAN

The Rifleman (RFL) is a flexible role in the platoon, and will typically be given specialist roles such as Drone Operator, Combat Lifesaver, Mortarman, Assistant Gunner, Forward Observer, or Anti-Air/Anti-Tank Rifleman. His main job is to operate his M4A1 Carbine and be masterful at whatever secondary role he is assigned.
WEAPONS SQUAD LEADER

VIKING-4
The Weapons Squad Leader (WSL) is in charge of coordinating indirect fires of the 60mm or 82mm mortars his squad operates. He works directly alongside the Platoon Sergeant to ensure placement of his mortar teams is ideal to accomplish the mission. In scouting missions, the Weapons Squad will typically have one 82mm or 60mm mortar on standby at the ORP while the other Weapons Team provides local security for the ORP.
WEAPONS TEAM LEADER

The Weapons Team Leader (WTL/FTL) directs his Weapons Team with whatever weapons the platoon require the weapons squad to operate. This, primarily, is the 82mm mortar. The responsibilities of the Weapons Team Leader vary depending on the system his team is operating, but he is largely in charge of ensuring his gunner has the gun laid based on the WSL's guidance, and oversees sustainment for his team.
PLATOON MEDIC

VIKING-7
The Platoon Medic (-7) is in charge of overseeing the health of the platoon. He coordinates directly with the Platoon Sergeant and the Mobile Medical Teams (MMT) to ensure expedient deployment of medical resources to the platoon when necessary.
