Pro:
Complex mission set for CAS in urban at night

Con:
Approaching CSAR in Urban as a “raid” was the wrong call IMO - needed more of a deliberate approach especially once it was highlighted we had no ISR and were blindly groping for locations. Hindsight’s 20/20 but a good lesson learnt.
For myself - I should have anticipated this and taken the time to divide the city up into sectors or reference squares and briefed all MISFOT CS accordingly for faster coordination of CAS

Pro:
  • Lots of communication between elements,
  • Quick and efficient clearing of search areas in the first 2 zones
  • Enjoyed the intense feeling from engagements, pucker factor from RPGs flying overhead
Con:
  • Multiple MASCAS events towards the end slowed momentum, felt like a scramble to make ad hoc teams to conduct searches
  • Comm issues intermittently through the op, making communicating difficult at times

Element Callsign: BUFFALO-3
Element Leader: Specialist Alexander.P

7th Cavalry Personnel Within Element:

Specialist Spin.M - Crew Chief
Warrant Officer 1 Bloggins.R - Co-Pilot

Pro:
  • Great intra-aircraft comms and delegation of duties
  • Good practice monitoring and transmitting in a very active radio environment
Con:
  • The first LZ in the North West of the city had 2 large cranes that presented a hazard to insertion. Marking hazards like this on the map and alerting pilots to their presence in the LZ brief would be helpful in preventing accidents.
  • Due to communication issues, there were individuals from the Atlas element who had a delayed insert during the mass cass events. It was unclear if there was a LZ available for their insert and it took a couple minutes for the confusion to be resolved.

Element Callsign: BUFFALO-1
Element Leader: Warrant Officer 1 Hamm.C

7th Cavalry Personnel Within Element:

Specialist Alexander.P
Warrant Officer 1 Bloggins.R

Pros:
  • Very fun night mission. Nice change in mission dynamics.
  • 2x BUFFALO...excellent decision to incorporate, and ALWAYS preferred for numerous reasons. Not quite enough Alpha Co. members present to do it full justice, but as always, in true 7Cav fashion, we managed and delivered the best results with the assets we had (equipment and personnel).
  • BUFFALO crews worked well together.
  • Teamwork was A+.
Cons:
  • Comms were not so great. Numerous CTAF calls skipped. These CTAF position reports are vitally necessary and mandatory SOP, both in 7Cav and IRL (i.e. uncontrolled airspace). Extremely important for SA, separation, and deconfliction.
  • Radio comms kind of turned into radio vomit. Comms brevity is imperative and all air assets should be mindful of KISS methodology.
  • As discussed and I thought resolved in previous ops, Infidel's tasking is CAS, not transportation/utility/logistics choreography. We really need to get away from this unless exigent circumstances absolutely dictate otherwise. [5] is best suited for any aviation coordination other than CAS.
  • Aircraft personnel and certainly the PC should always organize/reorganize team with the proper callsign for both radio comms continuity AND Ctab/BLUFOR tracking purposes to eliminate any possible confusion. This is quite simple and should never be overlooked.
