Tensions in Scandinavia are at an all time high after Finland and Sweden sent in requests to join NATO. The Russian government has previously stated that if Finland and Sweden were to join NATO, Russia would have to act "for their own self defense." With this in mind NATO members has given Finland and Sweden guarantees that if they were to be attacked while waiting for their applications to be approved, then NATO would support them militarily through an Article 5 response.
In a gamble to force the Finnish to withdraw their application and test the NATO response, Russian forces have crossed the Finnish border near Vaalimaa, rapidly moving down National Road 7 with Airborne and Mechanized units. A rapid deployment of the 7th Cavalry has managed to halt this column at the crossroads of NR7 and Highway 384 with orders to begin rolling back Russian forces before they can occupy the territory for an extended period of time.
