On November 20th, 1943, the V Amphibious Corps conducted an amphibious landing on Beito island in the Tarawa Atoll as a part of Operation Galvanic, the invasion of the Gilbert Islands in the Pacific. The capture of Beito was key to ensuring Amercian airpower could fully support the operation. Although previous landings had been relatively quiet affairs, this would be the first true contested landing in the Pacific theater, pitching the V Corps against 4,500 loyal and well trained Japanese defenders.
3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines will be tasked with landing at Red One. Casualties will be taken, but the island must be captured.
