On 23 May 2024 the Russian government launched a surprise attack on the border region of Virolahri, Finland.
NATO ground forces have been caught off guard be a surprise offensive by the 2nd Battalion Tactical Group, 4th Guards Tank Army. Hundreds of soldiers and tanks have crossed the Finnish border. NATO air power and Finnish ground forces has been able to temporarily halt the movement of the BTG by striking their supply lines and crippling their logistics network.
1st Battalion 7th Cavalry Regiment has been assigned the AO in order to counter the Russian offensive and establish NATO borders..
