It was the site where 82-year-old Syrian archaeologist Khaled al-Asaad\, who had worked for over 50 years as the head of antiquities at the site\; was captured and beheaded by ISIS

He had refused to reveal the location of valuable antiquities that the terrorist group was seeking to loot and sell on the black market.

Today\, militants aligned to extremist forces in Iran and the Syrian government are using Palmyra Airport to smuggle arms and possible chemical weapons into the area.
